If your sales reps frequently search the product catalog, you can display the Product Filter Box as soon as sales reps open the product selection page.
Setup
Navigate to Setup | Build | Installed Packages | Salesforce CPQ | Configure | Additional Settings -> set Open Search Filter By Default to TRUE.

As soon as you click Add Products button on the configurator, you are displayed with the available products. Product Filter Box gets popped up without clicking the Filter icon.
